Maroon 5 aren't the first band to fuse R&B and rock, but they certainly are one of the most convincing. One can almost hear Stevie Wonder's beaded braids clattering in time to their deep, funky grooves. At best, the band conjures up latter-day Motown, complete with a shuddering organ and hyperbolic vocals; at worst, they sound like a stylized boy band, with all the attendant close harmonies and dramatic pauses. But despite these musical schisms, Maroon 5 are a thoroughly engaging outfit, thanks to throbbing bass lines, hooky songs, and lead singer Adam Levin's swaggering delivery. --Jaan Uhelszki

2010-08-16 Sunday Morning
AWESOME CD! AWESOME GROUP! Love this CD, and the all the songs. Love Sunday Morning.
This is certainly one of the best CD's I have ever owned and collected. I can listen to this CD daily. Great CD and purchase. What an investment!

2010-08-01 Great Sound, Very Refreshing
This CD is great, I would highly recommend it.
I don't believe that there is a song on the CD that I don't like. Maroon 5 has a great sound, that's very refreshing from the mundane crap that you hear on the radio day after day.
Two Thumbs Up.

2010-06-19 Fresh Music
In the early part of the 21st century, it seemed like Boy Bands and electronic beats dominated the American music landscape. When Maroong 5 burst on the scene with their debut album "Songs About Jane" in 2003, it was like a breath of fresh air. Here was a group that combined RnB, funk, and rock and roll in a way that was previously unknown (at least on a grand scale) on US airwaves. Seven years on, the record still holds up as fresh music.

There's no doubt that "Songs About Jane" is a summer record. From beginning to end, it evokes images of hot, sticky summer weather. Lead track 'Harder to Breathe' is highly addictive funk, though the song itself is relatively simple. 'This Love' has more of a RnB beat, while 'Tangled' is more reminiscent of something Motown would have released back in the 1970s. There is a definite nod to the past throughout the entire album, but with enough modernity to aviod being kitsch.

For me, the first eight tracks are spectacular, especially the surprising 'She Will Be Loved', which takes the band into a slightly softer feel. Final track 'Sweetest Goodbye' is also charming, almost sounding like something by Uncle Kracker. However, the second part of the record is a bit boring. There are plenty of people who will probably argue with me on this, but it simply isn't my cup of tea.

Overall, "Songs About Jane" has, for me, withstood the test of time as a great summer album. A little funk, a little rock, a little blues, and a great combination of music.

I happened to hear This Love by accident and was instantly hooked. Imagine: a song with a bridge! What a novelty these days. The rest of the album is equally well written. Think: Sting meets Stevie Wonder meets Elton John.

Fans of Maroon 5 should also check out Citizen Cope.
