Greatest Hits

Greatest Hits

Price : $13.98

Album Description
It may surprise some to realize that Guns N’ Roses released only four full-length original albums, and two of those debuted simultaneously. But they were enough to forever change rock ‘n’ roll. Even more shocking is that one of the great bands in rock history, with its last studio album issued 10 years ago, has never had a "best of" compilation. Now it has. Welcome to the jungle with Greatest Hits (Geffen), released March 23, 2004. With 14 selections housed in a digipak, Greatest Hits features all eight of the band’s Top 40 Billboard Hot 100 tracks (five of them RIAA-certified "gold," i.e., sales of more than 500,000 units). Along with spanning the group’s five album releases, Greatest Hits also marks the debut on a Guns N’ Roses album of the band’s cover of the Rolling Stones’ "Sympathy For The Devil" for the 1995 film Interview With The Vampire.

2010-08-29 GREATEST HITS-DYNAMITE STUFF

Another fantastic album by Guns n Roses. I'm an old geezer that thrives not only
on '60's rock but also truly appreciates groups like this one.

Glad they included Sweet Child of Mine, one of my favorites.

2010-08-29 Good...but
This Greatest Hits CD was good. THe first 7 songs were fantastic, then the next couple were so-so. That's understandable as every song can't be great. What disappointed me was there were a few songs on this greatest hits CD that weren't Gun's & Roses originals. Live and Let Die...Beatles. Symapthy for the Devil...Stones. I didn't udnerstand why these would be on a Greatest Hits CD for Guns and Roses. Yes, they sang the songs, but I would prefer to hear their songs, not a remake of another group.

2010-08-06 Somewhat of a travesty... from a certain point of view, but great music nonetheless
The most dangerous band in the world...... and now we have the greatest hits huh? Well lets face it G'n'R were pretty much one of the top five bands on planet headbanger for much of their existence and spawned a range of hits that leapt up the mainstream charts around the world, turning their major players at least, into cultural icons of sorts.

But that doesn't mean this greatest hits package is in any way indicative of that nor really representative of their greatest recorded moments. Any real fan of this band is going to own at least three releases, Appetite (obviously) and the two Illusion albums. And hence in this day and age of CD burning at home there really is no excuse for any long term gunners fan from putting together a far more personalised slice of rifferama from the one time bad boys of hard rock/metal. I mean, at the very least this thing should have been a double disc and while they may have been hits for the band, I'm uncertain of where I stand on the inclusion of (count `em) five covers on a 14 track compilation. Is it just me or does that come across as a bit unseemly to you as well, dear reader?

Having said all of the above I have to point out the simple fact that the originals on this album are pretty much all ball tearin' slices of perfection. Seriously - it's hard to go past numbers like Welcome to the Jungle, Sweet Child O' Mine, Paradise City, You Could Be Mine and mini-suite November Rain. All worth the price of admission alone but of course we come back to my main point which is that.... you already own these songs don't you? I suppose there is some value here for the total newcomer but honestly if anyone asked me I'd just sling them my copy of Appetite for the weekend and they'd be on their way.

All of the above notwithstanding this is at least a four star release for the material on offer, I just have some philosophical issues I guess....

Great price shipped fast and cheap. The cd had scratches on front, case was in great shape and sounded great.

2010-03-29 For Very Casual Fans Only
Guns `N' Roses is probably the best and most important rock band of the last twenty-five or so years, and their continuing popularity ensures a large Greatest Hits market. This CD's title may be strictly accurate in regard to hit singles, but after Appetite for Destruction, Guns rarely released their best songs as singles; indeed, they often made bizarre choices. This is therefore a very poor and distinctly unrepresentative picture of - certainly not a Best Of, as Greatest Hits usually claim to be. It is fine for extremely casual fans, as the first five cuts plus "November Rain" are the Guns songs most played on radio; anyone wanting those plus a few more can get them here conveniently and easily. Everyone else, though, is poorly served. First, hits or not, several cuts - "Yesterdays" especially - are not among the band's best. Second, the inclusion of five covers among fourteen tracks - more than one third of the total - is truly strange. Even stranger is that the last three cuts, as well as four of the last five, are covers. This is particularly exasperating in that many excellent Guns songs are missing. Their "Knockin' on Heaven's Door" is of course a signature essential, and their "Live and Let Die" is played fairly often on radio and thus should arguably be here, but the rest should have been left off. Two ("Ain't It Fun" and "Since I Don't Have You") are from The Spaghetti Incident, a covers album universally considered the band's least good pre-Chinese Democracy effort. The latter is actually quite good, but the former's inclusion is simply inexplicable. Both should probably have been left off for Guns-written songs; at the very least, "Since" alone should have been included if each album was to be represented. The band's "Sympathy for the Devil" is also one of their lowest moments, a soundtrack entry presumably here only to attract those with all the albums. However, hard-cores will have it anyway, and no one else will care for it. There is indeed nothing previously unreleased or even fancy packaging to attract diehards, meaning only the extremely casual should even consider this. The low price is certainly attractive, but the bottom line is that Appetite is one of the greatest albums ever, and the Use Your Illusions have many superb moments. All three are essential, containing everything of real value here plus far more; they will cost a little more, but the investment is very worthwhile.
