Amazon.com More than a mere rap album, Mos Def's long-awaited The New Danger combines hip-hop, blues, soul, and rock in an 18-track package that seeks to transcend convention. In that sense, it shares a similar spirit with Andre 3000's The Love Below or Common's Electric Circus, with mixed results. Mos's reputation has been built on the strength of his lyrical charisma, and songs like "Close Edge," "Grown Man Business," and "Sunshine" show that his skills haven't faded just because he's Emmy-nominated. He's already proven that he can cut more than just street heat--best evinced on the soulful, poetic "Umi Says," a surprise hit from his previous release, 1999's Black on Both Sides. Yet, the rock- and blues-inspired songs here, while by no means poor, are acquired tastes, given their tendency to noodle--they simply can't compare with Mos's cutting verbal displays. The album's length and sometimes clunky sequencing can make for challenging listening, especially when so many of his more experimental cuts come early on. 2009-04-22 Mos Def doing what he wants This is basically mos def messing around from what I understand but he does a better job than you singing in the shower!!! Really though what had happen was mosdef is supposedly having some issues wit the label and saving all his good music for movies and President Bush. Now maybe he can do some songs for the Brother in the half white half black house(no dis, like Q-tip said back in the day black is black is black.) What I'm trying to say is maybe we can get a better inspired MosDef next time around.Some good vibes here and there though but no BlackStar here or Black on both sides. Look at him pointing a fake gun at his head so as to say here you go label executives I got something for you!! Mos def is a smart mc you know he can do better.
2009-04-01 When MC's are artists they put out releases like this Honest professional artistic expression. Hints of Rock, Soul, Blues, Alternative. It's Hip-Hop at it's core however he doesn't rhyme on all the tracks. He writes with expressions of black pride. He uses profanity in the context of artistic expression. I loved this release. I even liked the tracks I didn't love. I love that Mos had blatant disregard for the "formula". This is not your last cookie cutter hip-hop producer's efforts. He will lose many on this release. I love that too.
2008-07-30 still trying to listen to it i really like mos def, but i'm not sure about this one. i've had it since it came out but i haven't really listened to it really good. i like him as an artist, so i'll really have to try again with this one.
2008-04-24 Dumbass Hip-Hop Critics don't know Sh@#%! This album was a great comeback album. Black On Both Sides was the grimey New York album. On this album, he chose to expand on his music. I think he gets better with age. He isn't just centered on hip-hop....
2008-01-08 A New and Present Danger Watch out!! Mos Def fans will be pleasantly surprised by this album. There are many facets on this CD that we have not seen in hip hop. Mos hits us with everything from blues to rock and never misses a beat. And the beats are amazing and take you different places. There are a lot of closed minded individuals who negatively criticized this CD because most listeners are trained to be monotonous and never to step out side the box, but Mos Def is not to be put into the confines of a box of anything that suppresses his artistic creativity. This CD is not for those who don't love a wide range of music but for those who are music lovers no matter what the genre. Open your mind and let The New Danger make love to your ears.
